In 2017, three Student Veterans at the University of Southern Maine (USM) came together in the shared belief that Student Veterans face unique challenges and require specialized support. Stephen White, Mary Swanson, and Omar Andrews were grateful that USM offered ample opportunities and support, but recognized that few other Maine colleges offered adequate resources for Student Veterans.
Maine Student Veterans Alliance officially launched in 2018 as a registered 501(c)3 nonprofit with a board of local community leaders. Unfortunately, there is still a stigma among veterans about asking for help, especially about something so personal as financial need and coping about wartime trauma. We believe a veterans helping veterans approach combined with community support will ensure students finish their degrees and contribute to the Maine workforce.
Veterans Helping Veterans
“Student Veterans bring valuable qualities like team-building, project planning, and leadership, but also face unique barriers to success. We want to identify and fill the gaps so Student Veterans can finish their degrees and give back to the community.”
— Stephen White, Executive Director
